“Matsuyama Castle”, the last complete castle architecture from the Edo period over 400 years ago.

Matsuyama Castle, built over a span of 25 years, is in the center of Matsuyama City, Ehime Prefecture. The “Matsuyama Castle Ruins” are designated as a national historic site. It was built by the first feudal lord, Kato Yoshiaki, in the early Edo period in 1603. It was once destroyed by fire but was rebuilt in 1820 and has remained in its present form since then.

There are many buildings, such as the main castle tower and turrets, that convey the architectural style of the time, providing visitors with a timeless landscape. It is also one of the “existing 12 castle towers” and is the only one with tiles bearing the “Aoi Crest”(one of the most famous family crest, “Tokugawa Aoi”). It is built on Castle Hill, which is 132 meters above sea level, and you can reach the top by ropeway or lift. The view from the castle tower offers a 360-degree panorama of the city of Matsuyama, the Seto Inland Sea spreading in the distance, and the Shikoku Mountains. You can enjoy the scenery of each season, especially the cherry blossoms in spring and the autumn leaves in fall.
