1. Oboke and Koboke Gorges (Miyoshi City)

Best viewing: Mid-November to Late November
“Oboke and Koboke” are V-shaped valleys, approximately 8 km long, formed by the Yoshino River deeply eroding the Shikoku Mountains. The contrast between the emerald green water and the vibrant red and yellow autumn leaves of maples and other trees adorning both banks is breathtakingly beautiful. Viewing the autumn colors from a sightseeing boat is particularly exceptional.
Highlights
– Enjoy the powerful beauty of the gorge and autumn foliage from the water aboard the Oboke Gorge Sightseeing Boat.
– Discover local specialties and folklore about yokai (supernatural beings) at Roadside Station Oboke (Michi-no-Eki Oboke).
– he retro atmosphere of JR Oboke Station is also charming, highly recommended for railway enthusiasts.
The dynamic landscape of strange rock formations combined with vivid autumn leaves offers a unique Tokushima experience.

Newbie’s Recommendation!
The sightseeing boat is an activity you definitely shouldn’t miss! It can get chilly with the wind, so it’s a good idea to bring an extra jacket. It’s efficient to visit the nearby Iya Valley together with Oboke and Koboke.
2. Iya Valley (Miyoshi City)

Best viewing: Mid-November to Late November
Counted as one of Japan’s three hidden regions, “Iya Valley” is a mystical place surrounded by deep V-shaped valleys. The autumn foliage, especially around the “Kazurabashi Bridge,” paints the entire valley in fiery reds and yellows, further enhancing its secluded atmosphere. You can enjoy the surrounding spectacular views while crossing the thrilling Kazurabashi Bridge.
Highlights
– Experience both thrills and spectacular views by crossing the “Kazurabashi Bridge,” made from Shirakuchi vine (weighing approximately 6 tons).
– The “Peeing Boy” statue overlooking the valley, with autumn foliage as its backdrop.
– Relax at one of the secluded hot spring inns scattered throughout the area.
– Extend your trip to the “Niju Kazurabashi Bridge” (Double Vine Bridge) in Oku-Iya for an even deeper hidden region experience.
The sight of the mountainsides from the valley floor to the peaks beautifully colored is truly picturesque.

Newbie’s Recommendation!
The Kazurabashi Bridge has an unstable footing, so wear comfortable walking shoes. Early mornings are relatively less crowded, allowing you to enjoy the scenery at a leisurely pace. There are many restaurants serving delicious local cuisine nearby, so be sure to stop by.
3. Mt. Tsurugi (Miyoshi City / Mima City)

Best viewing: Late October to Early November
“Mt. Tsurugi,” the second highest peak in Western Japan, has been revered as a sacred mountain for mountain asceticism since ancient times. A lift allows easy access close to the summit, enabling even beginners to enjoy the magnificent mountain autumn foliage. The panoramic autumn colors of maples, beeches, and mountain ash dyeing the mountainside are truly a spectacular sight.
Highlights
– Access near the summit by lift, then enjoy about an hour of hiking to take in the 360-degree panoramic autumn foliage from the top.
– Take a break with a warm drink at “Mt. Tsurugi Summit Hut” near the summit.
– The contrast between alpine plants and autumn foliage.
The autumn foliage seen from an altitude of approximately 1,955m shows different gradations depending on the season, offering new discoveries with each visit.

Newbie’s Recommendation!
Temperatures near the summit are lower than in flat areas, so warm clothing is essential. Since the best viewing season is early, visiting in early October is recommended! The hiking path after getting off the lift is well-maintained, so you can feel at ease.
4. Tips for Enjoying Autumn Foliage Viewing

Advance Information Gathering and Transportation Check:
Tokushima has many spots in mountainous areas, so checking weather and road conditions (especially winter road closures) is crucial. Public transportation can be limited in some areas, so renting a car is convenient. Be sure to check access methods and parking availability in advance.
Appropriate Clothing and Gear:
In Tokushima, with its many mountainous and valley spots like Mt. Tsurugi and Iya Valley, comfortable trekking shoes or sneakers are a must. Since some areas can be slippery, choose shoes with good grip. Also, temperatures in mountainous areas are lower than in flat areas, especially in the mornings and evenings. Always bring warm clothing that can be layered, such as a light down jacket, fleece, gloves, and a hat.
Plan with Ample Time:
Autumn foliage spots in Tokushima Prefecture are spread over a wide area, and travel to areas like the secluded Iya Valley can take time. It’s recommended to plan with ample time, enjoying the beautiful scenery along the way.
Prepare Your Camera:
To capture the unique spectacular views of Tokushima beautifully, such as the emerald green of the Yoshino River, the deep V-shaped Iya Valley, and the magnificent panorama from Mt. Tsurugi, don’t forget to charge your camera or smartphone. A spare battery is also reassuring.
Enjoy Tokushima’s Unique Experiences:
After enjoying the autumn foliage, it’s also recommended to savor local cuisine like Iya Soba noodles or warm up your body in a secluded hot spring. Enjoying the local culture and food together will make your trip even more fulfilling.
