Be moved by the grandeur and beauty of the sand formations at the “Tottori Sand Dunes”!

The Tottori Sand Dunes are the largest sand dune area in Japan and have been designated as the only natural monument in the country as a coastal dune. Covering an area of approximately 16 square kilometers, stretching 2.4 kilometers east-west and 16 kilometers north-south, their grandeur overwhelms visitors. The main attraction is the magnificent 47-meter-high sand hill called “Uma-nose (Horse’s Back)”. When you climb up the steep slope, the Sea of Japan spreads out in front of you, and you can see all the way to the distant coastline.

The formation of the Tottori Sand Dunes began about 100,000 years ago. Due to the unique topography and climate of this area, sand brought from the sea was deposited over many years, forming the present dunes. The shape of the dunes changes daily due to the influence of the wind and the sea, and these changes create seasonal scenery.
In spring, you can see unique dune plants such as Hamahirugao, which bloom beautiful flowers. In summer, while it is hot, you can see the beautiful sunset over the Sea of Japan. In autumn, the flowers of dune scallions are in full bloom, and in winter, a fantastic landscape spreads out as snow covers the entire dune. The vast landscape is like another world, and the dunes, whose shape changes with the wind, offer new discoveries every time you visit.
However, the Tottori Sand Dunes are very hot in summer, and there is a risk of heatstroke. There is no shade on the sand dunes, so please take adequate precautions against heat stroke, such as wearing a hat, parasol, and drinks. Also, the sand gets very hot when the sun is strong. Walking barefoot or in sandals may cause burns, so please wear socks and shoes.
