Symbol of Peace, Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park

The Peace Memorial Park is established to commemorate the victims of the atomic bomb and to pray for everlasting world peace. This place was the central downtown area of Hiroshima City from the Edo period to the early Showa period, but it was destroyed in an instant by the first atomic bomb dropped in human history on August 6, 1945. After the bombing, based on the “Hiroshima Peace Memorial City Construction Law” promulgated on August 6, 1949, the construction of the Peace Memorial Park and facilities began in 1950. This construction developed the area around the hypocenter as a symbol of permanent peace, and it was completed in 1955. Within the park, there are several monuments prayed for peace, such as the Atomic Bomb Dome, the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, and the A-bombed Aogiri (Phoenix tree). The Atomic Bomb Dome is located just 150 meters from the hypocenter of the atomic bomb drop and is one of the buildings that conveys the horrific state of that time.

The Peace Memorial Museum is a place where you can learn in detail about the destructive power of the atomic bomb and its horrific consequences, and reconsider peace. Exhibits include the belongings of the victims, photographs taken immediately after the bombing, and detailed explanations of the effects of the atomic bomb. The Peace Memorial Park continues to appeal to the future generations not to let the tragedy of the past fade away. People from all over the world gather to pray for peace together at the Peace Memorial Ceremony held every year on August 6. The Peace Memorial Park teaches us the importance of not forgetting our history and continuing to pray for peace. Its message is not only for Hiroshima but also for the whole world, showing the importance of each of us wishing for and acting for peace.

The Peace Memorial Museum

In addition to its historical significance, the Peace Memorial Park is also known as a place where locals and tourists can spend a leisure time. Besides the historical facilities, the park is known for its rich beautiful nature and relaxing spots. In spring, the cherry blossoms in the park come into bloom, and the park gets crowded with families and friends enjoying picnics. The time spending leisurely under the cherry blossoms is a precious moment to re-appreciate the importance of peace. There are also cafes within the park, where you can take a break during your historical walk.

Peace Memorial Park is a place to demand to the future generations not to forget what happened in Hiroshima, as well as a place which citizens and tourists spend a leisure time to feel the peace. Therefore, everyone who visits will have a memorable time.
