The god of the sea, loved as “Konpira-san”, “Kotohira-gu”

Kotohira-gu, commonly known as “Konpira-san,” is a shrine located in Kotohira Town of Kagawa Prefecture, and its name is known throughout Japan. The main deity is Ōmononushi-no-Kami, who is widely worshiped as the god of maritime safety, fishing, business prosperity, and learning.The approach to Kotohira-gu is a long journey of 785 stone steps. However, the route is dotted with beautiful nature and historical buildings, allowing you to experience the charm of each season. The cherry blossoms are in full bloom in the spring, the fresh greenery is vibrant in the summer, the autumn leaves are beautiful in the fall, and the snowy landscape spreads out in the winter. One of the charms of Kotohira-gu is that it shows a different face when you visit each season.

Various shops and tea houses line the approach, providing visitors with time to enjoy local specialties and souvenirs. Particularly, “udon” is a specialty of Kagawa Prefecture, and it is a standard practice to enjoy a bowl of udon after the visit. Especially, “Nakano Udon School” is hugely popular among visitors from all over the world. It is a unique experiential facility that teaches the fun and technique of making udon. Here, you can learn how to make hand-made udon under the direct instruction of professional artisans. Starting from wheat flour, you can experience the entire process of kneading, stretching, and cutting. The udon you make can be boiled and eaten on the spot, allowing you to enjoy the taste of your own handmade udon. You can also learn recipes and ways to arrange udon using local ingredients.

Upon arriving at the main shrine of Kotohira-gu, a magnificent view spread out. You can look down on Kotohira Town far below and even further, you can see the Sanuki Plain and the Seto Inland Sea. This beautiful view is like a reward for climbing the long stone steps.

Kotohira-gu is a fascinating spot tied to its history and tradition, beautiful natural environment, and local culture.
